This course is for Montessorians working with students (primary through adolescents) who receive special education services. Children with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) spend most of their school time in the general education classroom; here is where the majority of learning takes place.  

The purpose of the course is to provide Montessori teachers with essential knowledge about special education, high-incidence disabilities, and critical practical strategies and guidelines in order to to effectively meet individual needs while making the Montessori curriculum accessible.

Participants will learn about:

  • the evaluation process & high incidence disabilities 
  • coplanning with the special education team & family communication
  • content of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • practical guidelines, applications, and class accommodations for students with needs related to:
    • Reading disabilities
    • ADHD
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder 
    • Sensory processing issues

This course will meet from 7-8:30pm ET on the following Tuesdays:

  • April 9

Participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible to request Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Loyola University Maryland.

Attendance Policy: To receive a certificate for NCMPS professional learning offerings we require participants to attend 80% of live sessions (typically this allows for two missed sessions).

Live Session Recordings: When available, recordings of live sessions will be posted to the course for no less than six months after the date of the live session. Recordings older than six months may expire at any time.

About the Instructor:

Andrée Rolfe holds the AMI Elementary Diploma from Washington Montessori Institute and an Ed.D from Teachers’ College, Columbia University in Special Education – Learning Disabilities. She has over thirty years of experience in public special education. Andrée taught master’s level courses at Fordham University and Introduction to Special Education at the Center for Montessori Education, Loyola University. She currently serves as the educational specialist at The Village School for Children in Waldwick, NJ and teaches. Her consultation work with Montessori schools focuses on supporting children who present with learning challenges and creating developmental reading, writing, and spelling instruction and practice in Montessori classrooms.
